A hallgatóknak fel kell ismerniük, hogy szavainknak következményei vannak. Amikor az áldozatokat zaklatják, félelmet, szorongást és alacsonyabb önértékelést tapasztalnak meg. Ennek eredményeként az áldozatok megváltoztathatják magatartásukat és érdekeiket, hogy megbizonyosodjanak arról, hogy biztonságban vannak-e. Gyakran ez elszigeteltséggel és korábbi érdekeik - például sport, klubok, szocializáció - elvesztésével ér véget. Ez szélsőségesebb eredményekhez is vezethet. Amikor az áldozatok úgy érzik, hogy nem fogadják el őket, veszélyes szokások alakulhatnak ki, hogy megkönnyítsék ezt a stresszt.
