When I felt like an outsider
Tony and Maria
Bernardo and Riff
I made it in the musical my freshman year in high school. Everyone was older, and more talented than I. I felt like I didn´t belong, everyone had their own cliques and I didn´t have that many friends. They made me feel like i didn´t belong, even if they unintentionally did it.
All the older people knew the songs we were preforming, and had background in theater and in performance. I made some friends and we knew each other from choir so we would make small talk backstage. Even still, we had a different response from the more talented actors and actresses. Everyone was bigger and older than I was. Whether their bigger was socially or physically I didn´t feel like I fit in.
Everyone had their own group and I didn´t feel like I fit into any of them.
The musical was West Side Story. The Jets vs the Sharks, and they were divided by a street. No one was able to associate with the other gang at all. Backstage where no one was playing a character there was still a divide feel, due to the fact that everyone was competitive and had different roles and social traits than the next person.
I was in four scenes, and one of the scenes I was able to be in was in Doc´s Corner Store. This was a scene with almost no main characters and made me feel separated from the main or majority of the cast.
