Pi was first approximated by the Babylonians and the ancient Egyptians. However, Archimedes of Syracuse was the first to calculate it by using polygons in a circle to find a closer approximation.
The symbol we use for pi today was introduced by William Jones in 1706 but popularized by Leonhard Euler in 1737.
Pi is now used by mathematicians all over the world. Ithas over 1,000,000,000 digits calculated so far!
