Storyboard Text

  • Play set in 1912
  • Titanic sank
  • WW1 1914-1918
  • The play was set in 1912 to show that something had to change in society. The characters in the play represent all of the upper class people, it was the exact opposite of what people wanted in 1945.
  • This is relevant to 'An Inspector Calls' as in the play, Mr Birling says that the Titanic is unsinkable. All people in the day though that the Titanic was the pest ship of it's day. This shows the upper class as being naïve and oblivious to danger.
  • "Life after war must be better!"
  • WW1 was the death and destruction of men at the time. Mr Birling also stated that there would never be a war, showing once again that the upper class are oblivious to the outside world as they are so caught up in their own little bubble of social status.
  • "Controversial"
  • Play performed 1946
  • The Upper class rely on the working class for them to generate enough money and then keeping it all, causing the upper class to become richer and the working class to become poorer as they only get paid a small amount. It is a capitalist society.
  • Wall street crash 1930
  • More people then died in WW2. Priestley had a moral boosting radio broadcast to keep the hopes up of the country.
  • WW2 1939-1945
  • The play was performed to show the audience that things had to change. He wanted people to see how horrible and arrogant the upper class were and that people needed to accept social responsibility for the greater good of society.
  • "Priestley is a radical!"
