  • In 1854, The US attempted to buy Cuba from Spain. However, Spain said that they'd rather see Cuba sink into the ocean. 
  • Uhhhh.. NO!
  • Can we buy Cuba??
  • JUSTICE FOR CUBA!!!
  • Spain enslaved the Cubans for years. Jose Marti was a poet and journalist who devoted his life to making sure that the people of Cuba would be freed. 
  • He also believed in guerrilla warfare, further leading to the war. 
  • I bet they did it even though I have no proof at all!
  • Although the explosion of the USS Maine on February 15, 1898, was an accident, US newspapers falsely blamed Spain for the incident.
  • We will definitely win this unnecessary war!!!
  • Because of this, America declared war on Spain on April 25, 1898. The Rough Riders, the first U.S. Volunteer Cavalry under the leadership of Theodore Roosevelt, was one of the units fighting in Cuba during this time.
  • However, this war was abruptly ended with the Treaty of Paris on December 10, 1898. The US would now have the right to annex the Philippines.

  • Um, EXCUSE ME, but this has been decided.. 
  • During this ending period, some people felt that the treaty violated the Declaration of Independence. However, the Senate finally settled it on February 6, 1899.
