1980 in Poland. Workers' protests led to demands for change in Poland. A worker named Lech Walesa made a trade union known as Solidarity.
1988, Polish regime agreed to free parliamentary elections - first free elections in Eastern Europe in 40 yrs. New gov't ending 45 yrs of communist rule in Poland.
Victory & New President
1995, Aleksander Kwasniewski, a former communist, defeated Walesa and became the new president. He moved toward increasing free market economy.
