Hattie's dad decides that he will take the sailor's help to get to the Oregon Trail and from there take a long and dreadful journey to Oregon. When he asks Hatties mom at dinner she doesn't make her decision until about a couple weeks after he asked her. She said ''yes''.
It took a couple of days to get to the Oregon trail but their journey is not over yet. Hattie's family and many other families will be crossing rivers, learning about poison, facing natural disasters, and facing many deaths. Many families will not make it to Oregon.
