In Verona, the Montagues and Capulets have a ancient loathing towards each other.
"Part, fools! Put up your swords. You know not what you do."(10, 58-59)
"Turn thee, Benvolio. Look upon thy death." (10, 60)
Foil- a character that shows qualities that are in contrast with the qualities of another person
"I hate the word, As i hate hell, all Montagues, and thee."(12, 63-64)
"I do but keep the peace. Put up thy sword, or manage it to part these men with me."(12, 61-62)
The first time Benvolio was introduced to the play was when Sampson and Gregory were about to fight the Montagues. Benvolio is neutral and tries to step in and get them both not to fight.
Tybalt was first introduced when he tells Benvolio off. He tells Benvolio hes going to be the man thats going to kill him.
In William Shakespeare's play, Romeo and Juliet, the first scene introduces Tybalt and Benvolio, two characters who are foils, or contrasted as opposites to highlight the other characters traits.
