Espen is delivering illegal newspapers to Tante Marie. When he does this, he finds the Germans driving behind him. They must investigate him, so he says he has "jam" in his bag.
Espen is now at Tante Marie's farm. The soldiers approved to let Espen go on. He must eat then get ready to leave. After this, his mom expects him to be home.
After winning a soccer match his friends, Espen comes to his house. Only to find soldiers confiscating his house for now illegal items. Luckily, his mom hid the newspapers in the laundry.
Espen is tired that the Germans keep tossing the Norwegians around. So he asks his dad for a job that will help prevent the Germans to rule in the future. Though his dad doesn't want this, he does anyway.
Trying to keep cover as a sick person, Espen gets caught by an early nemesis, Askel, who works with some of the Germans. Getting caught by Askel meant he had to run away, or his family would be threatened.
After telling his family good-bye, Espen and his guide are now leaving. Espen is upset that he had to leave all of a sudden, but it was for the sake of his family. He is headed to Sweden, where things could be better for the Norwegians and himself.
