Theme: Revenge is not always the answer. Indirect Characterization: S.T.E.A.L. for Fortunato
Topic: Man vs. Man
Fortunato insulted Montresor. This insult effected Montresor and he exacted revenge.
"The thousand injuries of Fortunato I had borne as best I could; but when he ventured upon insult, I vowed revenge"(Poe 1).
"I must not only punish, but punish with impunity"(Poe 1).
"He had a weak point-this Fortunato-altough in other regards he was a man to be respected and even feared. He prided himself in connoisseurship in wine"(Poe 2).
Fortunato doesn't want to be seen as a weak connoisseur of wine, so even though he is sick, he chooses to go out, with a costume on, and try the amontillado.
"The man wore motley. He had on a tight-fitting parti-striped dress, and his head was surmounted by the conical cap and bells"(Poe 2-3).
