Storyboard Text

  • We need to get these salt slabs to Timbuktu before night falls. These clothes are so hot.
  • Hey! An oasis!
  • C'mon big sis, its way to hot out here. I'm really starting to miss home now.
  • Where is it?
  • What is silent bartering anyway, and what is this salt and gold trade thing I've been hearing about.
  • Well the gold and salt trade were when camel caravans from North Africa carried bars of salt as well as cloth, tobacco, and metal tools across the Sahara to trading centers like Djenne and Timbuktu on the Niger River. Some items for which the salt was traded include gold, ivory, slaves, skins, kola nuts, pepper, and sugar.
  • Oh.
  • Now, Silent trade, also called silent bartering is a method by which traders who cannot speak each other's language can trade without talking. So that's why we give people these slabs and they'll give us gold.
  • OH! I get it now!
  • So basically, its like giving your money to Amazon and having them deliver it to you later, even if your not there?
  • I guess basically it is like buying something off Amazon.
  • Yeah, I guess I am pretty smart.
  • Look! We're here! You know what, you did a good job today little bro.
