  • Exposition
  • "Once upon a midnight dreary, while I pondered, weak and weary, over a many a quaint and curious volume of forgotten lore..."
  • Conflict
  • "Some late visitor entreating entrance at my chamber door...here I opened wide the door, darkness there and nothing more."
  • Rising Action
  • "Tell me why thy lordly name is on the Night's Plutonian 
  • The narrator is grieving over the loss of his Lenore. It is midnight on a bleak December day. 
  • Climax
  • He is grieving and unable to cope with the loss of a loved one.
  • Falling Action
  • The narrator begins questioning the raven, but the raven only replies with, "Nevermore".
  • Denouement
  • When the narrator asks is he will ever see Lenore again, the raven simply replies "Nevermore".
  • "Quaff, oh quaff this kind nepenthe, and forget this lost Lenore."
  • The narrator, furious at continuously hearing the ravens reply and yells at the raven to leave but the raven replies with "Nevermore".
  • "Prophet! said I, thing of evil!prophet still, if bird or devil. Whether Tempter sent, or whether tempest tossed thee here ashore...Get thee back into the tempest and the Night's Plutonian shore!"
  • And my soul from out that shadow that lies floating on the floor, Shall be lifted-Nevermore."
  • The raven never leaves, and the narrators soul will sadly never be whole again.
