Perspective of Apollonia Johann
Germany to America
Perspective of Apollonia Johann Germany to America (1956) R-We wanted to go to America for six years, but we needed a sponsor and then also my mother was very ill with tuberculosis (TB). They would not allow immigrants that were ill into America. When I turned eighteen, my parents said”You are an adult now and you can go by yourself to America.”I already had an uncle and my sister in America,so I left and it took half a year to get everything organised to leave. I left by boat to New York, USA, across the Atlantic ocean and it took nine days to get there.
OTF-I could not speak any English, I had no money,no job or profession and no one wanted to hire me because I could not speak English.I eventually found a few jobs as a cleaner, kitchen worker, factory inspector and a baker.
A-I now had the freedom to choice to be who ever I wanted to be and I could start a new life.
