Harrison Bergeron, age fourteen, has just escaped from jail, where he was held on suspicion of plotting to overthrow the government. He is a genius and an athlete, is under-handicapped, and should be regarded as extremely dangerous.
George and Hazel Bergeron are watching a ballet performance. Hazel is crying but has forgotten about it.
I am the emperor!
The ending of the dance; Hazel has no idea what happened in the dance other than the ending.
You been crying. What about?
A news report comes on stating that Harrison Bergeron has escaped from jail, and that people should watch out for the "dangerous" person.
I forget. Something real sad on television.
Harrison enters the news room, where he declares himself emperor and destroys his handicaps.
Diana Moon Glampers, the Handicap General, comes in and shoots both Harrison and the ballerina, his empress.
George walks in from the kitchen, noticing Hazel's sadness. Hazel has forgotten her son's death, and George never finds out.
