  • Mouth
  • The mouth is the first step of the digestive system. It has teeth, a tongue and saliva in it to help it break down food and carbohydrates.
  • The esophagus is the second step of the digestive system. Contractions of peristalsis helps move food to the stomach. Cardiac sphincter prevents the food from coming back.

  • stomach
  • The stomach is the third step in the digestive system. It is a large muscle sac that continues the chemical and mechanical digestion of food. Muscle contractions form chyme by churning and breaking food. It starts protein digestion too.
  • The small intestine is the fourth step in the digestive system. Most chemical digestion occurs here. The duodenum, the first part of the small intestine, is where chyme is pushed. The chyme mixes with with enzymes and digestive fluids.
  • Large Intestine
  • Small Intestine
  • The large intestine is the fifth step in the digestive system. It absorbs water as undigested material moves through to leave the body.
  • The liver is the last step in the digestive system. It helps digest fats. It produces bile which contains lipids and slats. The gallbladder stores the bile and releases it when duodenum needs it.
  • Gallbladder
  • Liver
