  • "When she walked across the room she couldn't feel her feet touching the floor. She couldn't feel anything at all- except a slight nausea and a desire to vomit."
  • Speech
  • "A few minutes later she got up and went to the phone. She know the number of the police station, and when the man at the other end answered, she cried to him-"
  • "Quick! Come quick! Patrick's dead!"
  • "You mean Patrick Maloney's dead?"
  • Thoughts
  • "Personally, I think it's right here on the premises."
  • "Probably right under our very noses. What you think, Jack?"
  • And in the other room, Mary Maloney began to giggle.
  • This is a direct characteristic because they are talking about how  Patrick, her husband, is telling her something important. She seems to take the news badly and starts to feel emotionless as the text describes her.
  • Effect on Others
  • "In fifteen minutes he was back with a page of notes, and there was more whispering, and through her sobbing she heard a few of the whispered phrases-"...acted quite normal...very cheerful...wanted to give him a good supper...peas...cheesecake...impossible that she..."
  • This is an example of speech because Mrs. Malony is talking on the phone with a police office. she is showing her emotion when she telling the police officer about the murder (she) committed.
  • Actions
  • "At that point, Mary Maloney simply walked up behind him and without any pause she swung the big frozen leg of lamb high in the air and brought it down as hard as she could on the back of his head.
  • This is an example of thought because Mrs. Malony thinking how amusing this is as they eat the murder weapon. Yet, the officers eat it all as she giggles in the other room. She is giggling because of the way she planned this out so she would never get caught.
  • Looks
  • "Her skin--for this was her sixth month with child--had acquired a wonderful translucent quality, the mouth was soft, and the eyes, with their new placid look, seemed larger darker than before."
  • This is an example of effects on other because she is trying to pull off her act after she just killed her husband. So the goes to the grocery store all cheerful and giddy to grab some cans from the cash register worker, Sam. She pretty much made Sam feel a bit more positive focus as some of her cheerfulness rubbed off of Mrs. Maloney.
  • This is an example of the characters actions because Mrs. Maloney kills her husband with the leg of a lamb because if what he told her. Her actions show how mad she was after being told this news.
  • This is an example of looks because this describes how she looks and what comparison there are. For example her skin was still in good quality even while a baby was in her womb.
