The Mesoamerican ballgame was an exciting and dangerous sport. This game included hitting a ball back and forth, and you could not use your hands or feet. This was a popular game played by many mesoamerican cultures for many years!
Hey this court looks like a Mesoamerican ballgame court!
What's so special about the court? And what ball did they use?
The ball was also special because it was made out of rubber. The balls varied in size depending on the location and could weigh up to 8 pounds! Mesoamericans were the first to use rubber, while in Europe they made leather balls with little bounce.
The court was unique becasue it was shaped like a capital letter "I" and is made of cut stone. The ballcourt was a symbol of the city's wealth and power.
WHOA! That's pretty cool. What reward did you get if you won...and what happened to the losers?
In some games, members of the losing team would have their heads cut off as a form of human sacrafice in a ritual to the gods. The winners were shown with praise, riches, and gratitude from the crowd.
