My father cut off his thumb in a wood chopping incident. I feel that it is my duty to become a voyageur because the North West Company will not hire a crippled steersman.
"Pierre, go get Dr. Guilliard!"
" Keep paddling, men!"
We just left St. Anne's Church to leave a donation and to pay our respects to fellow voyageurs who died on the journey. Most of the brigade likes me, few don't. After only a little while of paddling, my muscles are soar and I have blisters on my hands. I just want to go home.
I just want to go home!
The were rapids are coming up and they looked very deadly so, we decided to portage. We took the canoe off the water and had 3 members carry that while carrying packs. The rest of us carried the packs. The pack that I was carrying was very heavy and I almost fell to the ground. The others looked just fine with them. But, we made it and now we're going back on the water!
We made it to Lake Superior! I can now see why my father thought it was so rough. We decided to stay along the shore line for now because of the waves. When looking into the distance, it looks ever lasting and very rough. It's very cold, too!
We made it to Grand Portage! When I saw it off in the distance, I was suprized at how small it was. Everyone talks about it being so amazing. But, it's a relief that we made it. I even heard about a big feast and dance tonight.
"I thought it was bigger."
