  • American ideas branched off of British ideas
  • Literature-1820's
  • The first to begin developing these new ideas was known as the Hudson River School.  It started when an artist named Thomas Cole decided to paint the scenery of the Hudson River. They painted vivid landscapes of the Northeast.

  • A second generation followed depicting the American frontier. American Artists also represented the American wildlife and the American way of life. American Artists showed that the American people and way of life are worthy of art.

  • New American poets and writers flourished
  • Some poems were based on the past. Others spoke out about social issues and many best-selling novels were written by women which usually told about young women gaining wealth and happiness through honesty and self-sacrifice , and the hardships faced by orphans and widows.
