A Pakistani man called Changez is sitting in a café having a conversation with an American who is restless and remains unamed. The American asks him a question about the American university Princeton and it leads to him telling a story of his journey from Lahore to America.
Changez meets an American girl called Erica in Greece after graduating from Princeton and goes back to America with her to become her boyfriend.
He the gets offered a job at a consultancy firm called Underwood Samson. He goes to Chile on an assignment, but when he comes back Erica is gone and her clothes are found at the side of the Hudson river. He fails to complete the assignment his work have set him and ends up losing his job.
With no job, an expiring visa and no reason to stay in America, he moves back to Lahore and gets a job as a professor of finance.
With his wide knowledge of political issues he starts leading big groups and demonstrations against certain political ideas and when one of his students gets apprehended for the attempted assassination of an American representative, the blame gets pinned on him.
In a widely televised interview Changez criticizes the US government for pinning the blame on him. Then back in the café Changez notices that the stranger is very apprehensive of their surroundings as they walk towards the hotel. With the American now realising he is in extreme danger he reaches to his pocket. Changez says that he thinks it only his business card holder but the novel ends not revealing what the American takes out of his pocket.
