Storyboard Text

  • Just fine, how are you?
  • Good morning everyone! How are you all doing today?
  • Great! Each of you have previously shared with me that you no longer feel capable of participating in many of the tasks and activities that you once enjoyed. There are different stages in which we can move through in order to implement a change. Overall, the stages are based on the ability to self-manage, in order to focus on one's continued participation and well-being. The purpose of today's group is to begin the stage of contemplation, in which we will contemplate these feelings and behaviors by discussing the pros and cons of changing them.
  • Oh yes, I no longer plant flowers anymore because I don't feel I am capable of maintaining them. If I were able to I would regain a sense of fulfillment and happiness as I truly enjoyed caring for them.
  • If you all are able to think of a task that you now avoid, as it has become too challenging, we will first discuss the pros of implementing change, which may lead to increased confidence in regards to these tasks.
  • I also no longer grill or cook for my family as I used to. It provided me with a sense of responsibility, and allowed me to show my love for my family while eating dinner together.
  • It has been difficult for me to read my books because of my vision, and I have refused to listen to them on audio. But I believe if I got used to it, I would be able to participate more in the book club discussions that I have always enjoyed.
  • Bob or Tom, can either of you relate to this?
  • My wife no longer asks for my help when cooking. I would have to convince her to allow me to be apart of the task again. We would have to find a way to make the kitchen accessible for me, but I don't want to be a burden.
  • It seems as if there is a common theme of a sense of engagement and fulfillment if each of you were to alter your thoughts which would lead to actions of participating in these tasks once again. Now consider cons of implementing a change in your thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. Are there any concerns about this change?
  • Sometimes it is really difficult for me to remember things. So I may forget to water and maintain the flowers. I guess I would have to change the way I used to do it, and set reminders for myself because I don't want my daughter to have anymore responsibilities either.
  • If I switch to audio books I don't think it would feel the same as reading. Also, I don't want to be looked upon differently by others in my book club.
