"Whenever it fell upon me, my blood ran cold; and so by degrees --very gradually --I made up my mind to take the life of the old man, and thus rid myself of the eye forever."

The narrator believes that the reader thinks that he is mad.
The narrator is so disgusted and horrified of the old man's eye and decides to kill the old man.
When the cops arrive the narrator tries to act normal as if nothing had happened, but he can't handle the guilt and admits to the murder of the old man.
