This is the tone because the narrator is constantly trying to explain that he is not a madman, yet he is plotting against and stalking the old man.
This is the tone because the author murdered and dismembered the old man, then hid the remains under his floorboard.
This is the author's tone because he continues to hear the old man's heartbeat growing louder and louder and it drives him insane.
