Storyboard Text

  • One day, Newton was looking at an apple tree. He then saw an apple fall from a tree. He wondered why the apple fell. He wondered what force was causing the apple to fall and what force was causing the moon to stay in orbit.
  • Problem
  • Hmm... I wonder
  • Newton then wondered if the force that pulled the apple to the ground was the same force tugging on the moon.  He then hypothesized that there was a force that explained a falling apple and the movements of heavenly bodies.
  • Hypothesis
  • Aha! Maybe there is a force that explains a falling apple and the movements of heavenly bodies!
  • Newton then experimented by using a telescope to look at the moon. He saw the moon revolving around the Earth, and then he saw an apple fall from the tree.
  • Experiment
  • Let's see...
  • Newton then saw that all physical objects have a force of attraction. As he was collecting data, he saw that the moon and Earth tugged on each other. At a certain point, the tugs canceled each other out. On the other hand, an apple had little mass compared to the Earth, so gravity dragged it down.
  • Collection
  • Uh huh... *Scribble, Scribble*
  • Newton then analyzed the data, and saw that his hypothesis was correct. He then published a book known as the Principia about the laws of gravity.
  • Behold, the Principia!!!
  • Analysis
  • Although Newton did not know it, he had used the scientific method. He stated a problem, made a hypothesis, conducted an experiment, made careful observations, and analyzed the data. These five steps are the basic steps of the scientific method.
  • Hey Newton, did you know that you used the scientific method?
  • Conclusion
  • I did?
