On page 4 it says "I peek out the front window of our new apartment". In the book the people on Alcatraz live in apartments. The workers live with their families in apartments, except for the warden.
On page 207 it states that Pipers mom, wife of the warden, censors the mail. Moose is also wondering if his letter will make it through.
On page 35 it states that Moose goes by a mansion which is the Warden's house.
Most of the workers and their families live in the apartment #64. It had one big and large room and then 4 large wooden house for senior officers. The warden lived in a large house next-door to the cell house. He actually had the inmates with good records clean and cook for him.
On page 222, in the author's notes, it states that the wives would occasionally help out with the mail that was censored.
In this article it stated that the warden lived right next to the cell house, so he was on the island. The warden's house was also pretty big.
