  • Here's another 50 cents...buy yourself some fruits or take a taxicab to school or something.
  • Act One Scene One
  • In my mother's house there is still God.

  • You...sure...loves that little old thing, don't you?
  • Like this little old plant that ain't ever had enough sunshine or nothing--
  • Travis asks them for money—he is supposed to bring fifty cents to school—and Ruth says that they do not have it. Walter, however, gives Travis an entire dollar while staring at Ruth.
  • Act One Scene Two
  • Where is he going to live, on the roof?
  • Yes-- She says everything is going to be fine...
  • "She"--What doctor you went to?
  • Beneatha argues that God does not seem to help her or the family. Mama, outraged at such a pronouncement.
  • Act One Scene Two
  • I got you some records and a Nigerian robe.
  • Mama goes to the window to tend her plant. Ruth and Mama talk about Walter and Beneatha, and Ruth suddenly faints.
  • Act One Scene Two
  • Your wife want to talk to you.
  • Beneatha wasn't sure if they should have another kid. Ruth calls the doctor “she,” which make Mama suspicious.
  • Asagai visits Beneatha, and they spend some time together by themselves. He brings her some Nigerian clothing and music as gifts.
  • Oh, Asagai!... You got them for me!
  • Walter returns home and wants to talk about his liquor store plans. Ruth wants to discuss her pregnancy with him and becomes upset when he will not listen.
  • Well that's too bad!
  • Let him go and drink himself to death.
