Storyboard Text

  • In the 1500's, Ireland was ravaged by war.
  • This resulted in a lack of food.
  • Historians believe that potatoes could have arrived to Ireland from shipwrecks, or from falling off boats.
  • When potatoes arrived in Ireland, the Irish people began to rely heavily on one food source
  • In 1845, the potato blight which had hit Canada a year earlier hit Ireland and wiped out a third of the potatoes.
  • Between 500,000 and 1,100,000 people died in the famine
  • Over 1 million Irish people migrated to America on "coffin ships", named that because of how many died during the journey
  • When the Irish arrived the Americans were overwhelmed due to the vast amount of poor refugees.
