  • Montresor develops his plan.
  • Montresor meets Fortunato at the Carnival.
  • Montresor leads Fortunato to his catacombs.
  • Montresor develops his plan for revenge on Fortunato. Montresor wanted revenge on him because Funtunato insulted him.

  • Montresor finds Fortunato at the Carnival. Forunato had been drinking and had many women around him. Montresor asks Fortunato if he could test-taste a bottle of wine he had bought and see if it was an Amontillado.

  • Montresor's plan was to bring Fortunato down to his family's catacombs and to leave him there. On the way there, Montresor kept giving Fortunato more wine to keep him drunk. Finally, they got to their destination and Montresor started his work to end Fortunato.

  • The word choice that the author used in the beginning is a symbol of the story because it tells you that the story is dark and serious.
  • The carnival is a symbol of foolishness for the story because it symbolizes that Fortunato was foolish enough to get so drunk and literally walk into his death trap.
  • The catacombs are a symbol of death for the story. All the skeletons lying around the floor were a big giveaway that something bad was going to happen.
