  • Montresor greets Fortunato at the carnival, where Montresor tells Fortunato about Amontillado and they leave to Montresors crypts to show Fortunato the Amontillado.
  • Symbol
  • Fortunato has a bad cough and the crypts are covered in mold, so Montresor tells Fortunato that they should go back because it could get worse. Fortunato refuses and continues to drink wine, and then they toast.

  • Montresor chains Fortunato to the wall then puts stones up to close up the space where Fortunato is. Fortunato then dies and Montresor leaves.

  • Poe uses Fortunato's determination to get the wine and his obsession of getting Amontillado to represent greed.

  • The name Fortunato mean 'lucky' which is used symbolically as an ironic device because he meets an unfortunate fate.
