There was a boy named Salz who had a condition where his body formed a much thicker than normal mucus. While he was searching for herbs in the woods one day he came across a piper wearing bright clothes. He talked with the piper about his life and what of the world he has seen. Suddenly, Salz has a spasm of coughs and his mucus begins to clog his throat so he stands upside down to let gravity help get rid of the mucus.
Salz lived on a farm with his three older brothers, his father and his grandmother. They live not far from a town called Hameln where they often sell the beer they brew from the grain they grow. Their beer is widely regarded as the best.
Salz takes lessons of literature as well as other subjects from Pater Frederick. Salz has to go to another town called Hannover to meet with him. After his lessons one day he found a black cat in the street and adopted him, naming him Kuh. He chose this animal because he is part of a coven where each member must have a pet or animal that is black, which is called a familiar.
There are seven men, including Salz, and five women in the coven. They are planning to sacrifice a cow by burying it, hoping it would help stop the illness spreading around Hameln. A priest, Pater Frederick, is also there to witness the sacrifice.
As the illness spread in Hameln a lady came to Salz's grandmother asking for help because she has various brews for certain sicknesses. This women explained the symptoms of her family and how their hands hurt, their feet are numb and they have been vomiting continuously. Salz helps his grandmother make a brew that might help the sick people. They make much more than the one lady will need because they suspect more people will be asking for it.
Finally, it happened. Someone in the town died of the illness. She was a servant with a daughter, who became Salz's grandmother's responsibility because she was trying to save the woman. Salz's father does not want a new child in the house, but Salz agrees to take care of her, so she ends up living with them.
