  • Fortunato's Tomb
  • Montresor tells Fortunato about the supposed cask of Amontilliado. Montresor tells Fortunato that he will have Luchresi tell him if the cask is real, since Fortuanto is busy and sick. Fortunato gets upset at the blow to his ego and insists that they go see the cask at once.
  • Symbol
  • Montresor leads Fortunato deep into the caatacombs. He gives Fourtunato ample opportunities to turn back but Fortunato's pride keeps him wanting to get to the Amontilliado. Montresor keeps giving him wine.
  • Tone
  • Montresor seals Fortunato in the wall of the catacombs for insulting him. At the time the story is told, a half century has past and no one has found him.
  • Motif
  • A symbol used in this story is the fact that Fortunato is dressed like a jester, or a "fool".
  • The tone of this story is dark and arrogant. The tones of murder lend to the dark atmosphere and Montresor is arrogant at the fact that he got away with murdering Fortunato.
  • "Amontilliado" is a motif repeatedly used in this story. It is said to reinforce Fortuanto's greed and pride that leads to his downfall.
