  • Montressor approaches Fortunado at the public event, and tells him of the supposed bottle of Amontillado in his Catacombs.
  • The Catacombs
  • Fortunado already being in a drunken stagger is tricked into going deep into Montressor's Catacombs.
  • The Amontillado
  • After feeding Fortunado wine all the way through the Catacomb, Montressor chains up and builds a brick wall around Fortunado. He leaves him to die, because Fortunado previously insulted him and his family.
  • Fortunado's Cough
  • The Catacombs represented death......
  • The Amontillado stood for the happy ending where both of the men stood and drank it together, but really it was a symbol for the end of Fortunado's life.
  • Fortunado's cough seemed to be one of the motif's of this piece of literature. Continuously reminding the reader of his current state of health.
