Storyboard Text

  • Japan closed its doors to outsiders and limited foreign ships to only a small port in Nagasaki.
  • There, I created a closed door policy
  • I don't think you quite understand what a closed door policy implies
  • Mr. President, if we don't act now the British will control all trade in the area.
  • President Fillmore was informed by Commodore Perry that Britain was taking over trade in Europe and something had to done.
  • Well then I suppose we will just have to "negotiate" with Japan.
  • What should we do now?
  • This letter was supposed to given to the emperor to negotiate trade in Nagasaki.
  • Take your Navy to Japan and give them this letter.
  • Perry went to Edo Bay instead of Nagasaki.
  • Set sail for Edo Bay men.
  • But I thought we were supposed to go to Nagasaki.
  • To prevent consequences the emperor had someone receive the letter.
  • If you don't get someone with higher status for me to give this letter to there will be consequences.
  • The emeror agreed to an open door policy. Maybe it was because he was threatened.
