Storyboard Text

  • Oedipus talks to a priest , tells him not to worry and lets him know that Creon is off seeking Apollo advice.
  • I sent Menoeceus' son Creon, Jocasta's brother, to Apollo, to his Pythian temple. That he might learn there by what act or word i could save this city.
  • Thanks for your gracious words.
  • Creon returns and Oedipus learns he has to find the murderer who killed Laius, the former king, and expel them from Thebes in order to get rid of the curse.
  • Dramatic Irony
  • I will tell you, then, what I heard from the God. King Phoebus in plain words commanded us to drive out a pollution from our land.
  • Speak it all; the grief I bear, I bear it more for these than for my own heart.
  • Oedipus promises to save the city and demands information from anyone who knows about the stranger who killed Laius.
  • But if you shall keep silence, if perhaps some one of you, to shield a guilty friend, or for his own sake shall reject my words hear what I shall do then:i forbid that man whoever he be, my land, my land where I hold sovereignty and throne; and I forbid any to welcome him a sharer in sacrifice or suffering to the gods, or give him water for his hands to wash.
  • Oedipus asks Teiresias for help. Oedipus is enraged by Teirsias's reluctance to talk and demands that he speaks whether he likes it or not.
  • My lord, in you alone we find a champion, in you alone that can rescue us.
  • Teirsias says that Oedipus is Laius's killer.
  • I say you are the murderer of the king whose murderer you seek.
  • Oedipus now more angry, accuses Creon sand Teirsias of framing him.
  • Great store of jealousy fill your treasury chests, if my friend Creon, friend from the first and loyal, thus secretly attacks me, secret desire to  drive me out.
