  • Due to the tragic 9/11 attack, multiple men decided to take a stand and pledged to defend their country, as Marcus Luttrell did so when he joined the SEAL program.
  • “They may not have been the precise same guys who planned 9/11. But they were most certainly their descendants, their heirs, their followers...And our coming task was to stop them...” (Luttrell 15).
  • Theme: Revenge for 9/11. 
  • ‘Negative,’ I responded.  I climbed again, I fell again, but somehow I kept going.” (Luttrell 94).
  • Marcus goes through multiple trials and missions as he pushes to become a Navy SEAL.
  • " ‘You want to quit?’  ‘Then get right back up there,” he said.” (Luttrell 94).
  • Theme: Never, Never, Never Give Up.  
  • Symbol: SEAL Trident, because all 4 men have earned it. 
  • SEAL Team 10, which consisted of Marcus Luttrell, Michael Murphy, Danny P. Dietz, and Matthew G. Axelson, were sent to capture or kill Ben Sharmak, a known bomb maker under Osama bin Laden.
  • They scale the Hindu Kush mountains of the Kunar province in Afghanistan to obtain a vantage point on the whereabouts of Sharmak and come across three goat herders.
  • The team makes the decision to let the herders go free but within about ninety minutes they have the Taliban on them.
  • "...Still claimed he was in contact with me and that whatever else was happening, I was not dead.”
  • After a long firefight with the Taliban, Marcus Luttrell is left the lone survivor and Marcus makes it back to America.
  • Symbol: Texas flag, because Marcus takes pride in his home, Texas.
