Fear was a major theme during the Red Scare that inspired many people to accuse others of being communist to escape the punishment of being jailed (Jarmul). Elia Kazan was one of the men to name names in fear of being persecuted (Dunbar). In the Crucible fear was also very prevalent because Mary Warren accused Proctor of being the "devil's man" just so she would not be punished.
Kazan was a very popular informant who named many names in order to escape punishment.
"You're the Devil's man!" (Miller 118).
Mary accuses John of witchery out of fear of being convicted herself.
Towards the end of the Red Scare people began to distrust General Palmer because of the extreme actions that he took in convicting people that were accused of communism (Jarmul). This event also occurred during the Salem Witch Trials with Judge Danforth, many of the people of Salem such as John Proctor began to distrust his judgment after he jailed his wife and Rebecca Nurse (Miller 120).
