Storyboard Text

  • I wanted to spread the word about the destruction, so I showed Robert Johnson, a publisher at Century Magazine.
  • Look around, you can see the destruction done by herding. This isn't right, something must be done to protect these lands, because if nothing is done, the whole ecosystem could die back.
  • Oh my, something must be done soon. Let me publish an article about it in the magazine. and maybe people will start to be more careful.
  • The next year, after advocating to congress, Yosemite National Park was established in 1890.
  • So we are in agreement that the protection of the Yosemite Valley by creating a national park is a good use of resources, and that protecting dying ecosystems is necessary.
  • Two years later, the Sierra Club was founded in 1892 to keep Yosemite and others, as parks and not for resources.
  • Yosemite is really a thriving environment now that its a national park.  But I think it would be a good idea to create a group to help protect it from those who want it open for business purposes.
  • That sounds like a grand idea.
  • I have been trying to come up with a conservation plan for the many other places around this beautiful country to protect and maintain their ecosystems. It is very important to protect these parts of the country.
  • I toured Teddy Roosevelt around Yosemite in 1903, this led to stronger protection of Yosemite, and the creation of Grand Canyon and Sequoia National Parks.
  • You see Teddy, this park is such a beautiful place, and there are many more like this.
  • Sadly after years of fighting against it with the Sierra Club, the Hetchy Hetchy Valley, next to Yosemite, was damned as a water reservoir for San Fransisco in 1913.
  • John Muir died later that year in 1914. He will always be remembered for the work he's done, and that start of the conservationist movement.
  • I have been the president of the Sierra Club since its creation, I helped advocate for the creation of many national parks, and I feel like I have followed my love for mother nature. I know my time is coming soon, but I will continue to hike through Yosemite, and explore more and more.
