Storyboard Text

  • Elie starts to hate the SS and their ways as rulers over the Jewish. Also, this is the first time he told the reader that he had hatred within him.
  • This was the first time I began to hate them, and my hatred remains our only link today. They were my first oppresors. They were the faces of hell and death.
  • "But I'm not, I'm fifteen..."
  • "Fifteen."
  • The little boy he used to be is now gone and is replaced by a young adult. Elie has to mentally mature in order to keep up with his fellow prisoners.
  • "Hey kid, how old are you?"
  • "No. You're eighteen."
  • "Fool, listen to what I say."
  • Now, he get's rid of that child from before permenantley, and this part of him was basically killed within him forever.
  • The student of Talmud, the child I was, had been comsumed by flames. All that was left was a shape that resembled me. My soul had been invaded - and devoured - by a black flame.
  • His life revolves around getting food and living. First, his was living for his dad and family but now it's only for him and his survival.
  • The bread, the soup - those were my entire life. I was nothing but a body. Perhaps even less: a famished stomach. The stomach alone was measuring time.
  • Elie knows that fighting for his own survival rather than fighting for both him and his father is better for a chance to live. This shows his most primative stste as a human; to live and only to live.
  • If only I didn't find him! If only I were relieved of this responsibility, I could use all my strength to fight for my own survival, to care of only myself.
  • Being relieved of his father has Elie both melancholy but grateful. He even seems relieved that nothing was holding him back anymore from his survival.
  • I did not weep, and it pained me that I could not weep. But I was out of tears. And deep inside me, if I could have searched the recesses of my feeble conscience, I might have found something like: Free at last!....
