The region, with a total area of some 85,800 square miles, has been the subject of dispute between India and Pakistan since the partition of the Indian subcontinent in 1947.

I read that the population of the Indian-administered is more than 60% Muslim, making it the only state within India where Muslims are in the majority.

As with other disputed territories, each government issues maps depicting their claims in Kashmir as part of their territory, regardless of actual control.
One of the origins of the conflict is with water. Many of the Pakistani irrigation systems can be controlled from India.

Tourism has been important in Kashmir for many years. Many people call the region Paradise on Earth.Tourists from all over the world visit Kashmir.
