Hi, my name is Jane Goodall. I work with chimpanzees in Gombe, Africa. I’ve worked in Gombe for about 50 years. I am truly passionate about chimps, and my life revolves around the chimpanzees.
Jane was born on April 3, 1934 in England. Her passion for animals showed at an early age. She showed a lot of interest in animals and their behaviors. As she grew up, her love for animals grew. She had her first meeting with Louis Leakey, a British paleoanthropologist, at the age of 24. She began working with him, and a year later she started studying chimpanzees in Gombe, Africa.
When I was the age of 24, after many months/years of working as a waitress, I finally had saved up enough money to go to Africa. That was my first trip to Africa. I had arranged for a meeting with Louis Leakey while I was there to pursue my dream of working with animals.
This event in her life may seem small, but it actually had a big impact on her life. Just meeting with Leakey and getting a job with him led to her working with chimps. If she hadn’t arranged the meeting with him, she wouldn’t have gotten to where she is today. She has become very successful and well-known throughout the world. She’s had a huge impact in the world of chimpanzees.
Later into my adult life, I was walking around at the marketplace when I noticed a chimpanzee laying on the top of a cage. It was very humid outside and the owners were just letting the chimp lay there and suffer. There weren’t any laws saying that you can’t leave a chimp lay there like that, but it’s common sense that it isn’t the right thing to do. I felt bad for the chimp, and that’s when I realized that I had the ability to help chimps in the same situation as this one. That’s when the Jane Goodall Foundation was created. We have been able to rescue over 100 chimps in poor living conditions and put them into habitats that will keep them safe and protected.
Jane has had experiences like these two that have shaped her into who she is today and have helped to build her character. Jane shows that you are able to accomplish anything if you just put your mind to it.
