Storyboard Text

  • Once Elie first reaches the camp, one can already tell that he is changing because usually he would always cry (even when he prayed) yet know there is chaos and he is not crying, and he is telling his friend not to cry either.
  • ""Don't cry Yehel," I said, "Don't waste your tears.""
  • Here it already shows Elie losing faith, because he is losing faith in his father, because in stead of comforting his father he is mad at his father for getting himself beat up by Idek.
  • "Why couldn't he have avoided Idek's wrath?"
  • "My head was spinning;you are too skinny; you are too weak; you are good for the ovens"
  • This was showing how at this point in the book, he already lost a lot of faith, even though his father was with him encouraging him to keep hope the whole time.
  • Here it is showing how selfish he is becoming throughout the novel, because here he is saying he does not care if people die, he just wants to survive. Although this is a very bad thought, (and very selfish) the people around him (The Nazi's etc.) made him think this way due to all the torture they were doing to him.
  • "At this moment the others did not matter."
  • This is showing how the camp took away all his hope because if he wants to die this means that he feels that he can't survive the camp anymore and has no more strength to survive. This also means he does not care about his father because if he dies, then his father dies too.
  • "The idea of dying, of ceasing to be, began to fascinate me, to no longer exist."
  • Here, he has lost all hope because his father is dying, and calling his name but Elie does not even care anymore. Although it could be considered 'evil' to ignore your dying father, Elie had no choice, it was the only way he could survive.
  • "He continued to call me. The officer wielded his club and dealt him a violent blow to the head."
