Storyboard Text

  • This shows how in the beginning, he starts becoming angry at God, and starts questioning his God because of what is happening around him.
  • "For the first time, I felt anger rising within me. Why should I sanctify His name?"
  • At this point, not only is Elie questioning God, but he is wondering if God is even there with them. Although this is considered a sin, because one should not question God, in the circumstances he is in, it only makes sense to start questioning God.
  • ""For God's sake, where is God?" They were all questioning."
  • Auschwitz
  • This is showing how not only is Elie mad, at God, questioning him, but he also thinks that God is being 'unfair', given the fact that in the quote he is describing how unfair it is that all these people are being tortured, yet they should still pray to God, even though God is not doing anything to help them.
  • "What are You, my God? I thought angrily. How do you compare, to this stricken mass gathered to affirm to You their fate."
  • This scene shows everyone squished in the bunks and at this point in the book not only is he mad at God, but he refuses to even acknowledge him. One can understand why he though this due to the intolerable circumstances he was in.
  • "Blessed by God's name? Why would I bless him? Every fiber in me rebelled."
  • Auschwitz
  • Here he reflects back on how religious he was before the concentration camp, and specifically states that he would pray all the time, yet while he was in the camp he would not pray because he thought there was no point to it.
  • "In those days, I fully believed that the salvation of the world depended on every one of my deeds, on every one of my prayers. But now, I no longer pleaded for anything."
  • Auschwitz
  • "I did not fast. First of all, to please my father who had forbidden me to do so. And then there was no longer any reason for mo to fast."
  • Here is he saying that he does not believe in his own religion anymore, because if he did not believe the Jewish holiday that means he was not going to fast.
