  • The Vikings settled into Russia, and they influenced Russia greatly. From modest beginnings, Russia ended up expanding to become the largest country in the world.   
  • In the beginning 1555, Construction begins on St. Basil's Cathedral in Moscow. Then the Romanov dynasty of czars begins. 
  • Then there was Peter the Great, he became czar of Russia and later moves the capital to St. Peterburg. St. Petersburg provided direct access by sea to Western Europe. 
  • Then during World War 1, (1914-1918), the Russian people were angry and they revolted. In 1917, the Russian Revolution occurred, ending the rule of the czars. Then the communist party, led by V.I. Lenin took control of the government. 
  • In 1922, Russia becomes part of the Soviet Union. The USSR leaders ruled the nation  from its capital in Moscow. And by the time WWII ended, Joseph Stalin, had taken over leadership. 
  • In 2000, the president of Russia became Vladimir Putin. The soviet union leaders adopted a command economy. The government takes control of the major sources of the state's wealth, including lands, mines, factories, banks, and transportation systems.
