Edith and her family live during the time of the Holocaust. Edith's family is in great danger. Her father decided that she should leave the country. She is going to America
Edith makes many new friends on the way to America. Including a boy named Julius. They all help each other to keep their minds off of the fact that they won't be going home
They finally reach America, where the group of friends have to say goodbye. Edith gets on a train that will take her to Chicago where she will meet her Uncle Jacob.
Edith receives a letter from her sister back in Germany saying that both her parents died in concentration camps. She is devastated, but realizes that it's a good thing that she was saved, because now she can carry on her family name and traditions.
She meets her uncle and they go home. She meets her aunt and her cousin. Her aunt isn't very nice. Edith has to sleep on a couch, and has lots of chores
The U.S. goes to war with Germany to help the Jews. This means that Edith has to go register as an enemy alien. She isn't allowed to do many things.
