  • In this scene, Pi's father is bringing him to the zoo gates to show him the dangers within. The zoo gates symbolize the danger that animals pose, but also how humans are not too far off from being just like animals. Pi, while on the life boat, starts to develop more animal-like instincts. In other words, he goes through the gates.
