Storyboard Text

  • What a beautiful day to go to the beach, which really puts me in the mood to discuss Shakespeare's Othello. What do you think about the meaning of the word "blood" in the play?
  • I think it represents violent actions in the play.
  • That is true, but blood could also represent a character's identity, such as their race, culture, family, or social status.
  • Really? Do you have any examples?
  • Of course I do! In act III, scene III, when Iago is thinking over his plan to fully convince Othello that Desdemona is having an affair, he says that "with a little act upon the blood, [anger] burn[s] like the mines of sulfur" (141). As horribly racist as this is, this reference to Othello's blood is meant to represent his "barbaric" nature when angered, due to his race.
  • Wow, I didn't realize how one word could have such a deep meaning in the play!
  • This also applies to Desdemona. For example, in act I, scene I, Brabantio exclaims that Desdemona's marriage to Othello is "treason of the blood" (19). He claims that Desdemona has ruined her family’s respectability and high social status by marrying someone of another race, so blood represents the familial status and importance in society, and race in this example.
  • Help! I can't swim!
  • Wow that's really cool! What did you think about the last two acts of the play?
  • I think Othello's falling for "honest Iago['s]" trap and believing his lies about Desdemona's affair with Cassio really set him up to be a tragic hero. His immense trust in Iago caused him to kill his beloved wife and himself and lose all respect, a much harsher fate than he deserves.
  • Nerds
  • That was a nice chat. I always love discussing Shakespeare!
  • And what a peaceful walk that was! That relaxation is just what I needed!
