Madame Loisel at the Ball
After the Loss of the Necklace
Ten Years Later
Madame Loiselle, a woman who had always yearned to live an excuisite life with affluence, is surprised by her husband when he comes home with an invitation to a ball. She borrows a friend’s diamond necklace to the party as to not look out of place, and instantly becomes the center of attention.
Upon leaving the ball, Madame Loisel notices that the Necklace has gone missing and her husband begins to search for it. Upon not being able to locate the necklace, Mathilde writes an excuse to her friend as they search for a replacement. They find a near identical necklace for thirty six thousand francs, and put themselves into debt in order to buy it and give it to the friend.
Loisel uses his inheritance of eighteen thousand francs to pay off most of the debt, leaving the couple to work ten years to make enough money and pay the rest. Mathilde learns what hardship means to the poor, and grows old within the ten years. After the debt is payed, she finds her friend Madame Forestier, of whom the necklace belonged to, and tells her about the necklace. Madame Forestier then reveals that the original necklace had been fake the whole time.
