- "But weird me, I was born with too much grease inside my skull, and it got all thick and muddy and disgusting, and it only mucked up the works"(Alexie pg. 1).

- "Traveling between Reardan and Wellpinit, between the little white town and the reservation, I always felt like a stranger. I was half Indian in one place and half white in the other. It was like being indian was my job, but it was only a part time job. And it didn't pay well"(Alexie pg. 118).
- Wellpinit
- This quote shows how the main character, Junior, sees himself as weird and abnormal. The introduction to the book depicts that he'll somehow be affected in the future by this "gross" and embarrassing health problem. This health situation makes the reader determine that he has a very low self-esteem and will struggle during certain interactions because of his low self-esteem.
- "Junior" is the name he is known for at the reservation. He is also known as "Arnold" by the white kids at Wellpinit. He sees himself through the eyes of the white kids. He identifies himself as Bigfoot or a UFO because in his new school he's seen as an outsider or stranger. His self identity decides his actions with people. The way he looks at himself will affect what he says and the role he plays in the modern world.
- This quote shows how Junior views himself hopping between the two cities. He feels as if there's two different people in each place. Junior sees both of them as strangers who aren't accepted in either place. This statement demonstrates to the reader that his self conception is that he's not confident in himself and he'll shy away from certain situations. This will be a barrier to what he wants/needs to do in the world.
