  • The first battle of the Civil War happened at fort Sumter, a Union fort that was inside the virginian border. Confederate forces moved in and forced the Union to retreat on April 12th 1861.
  • Wilderness
  • The Battle of Vicksburg was hugely significant, from May 2nd to July 9th 1863, General Grants army surrounded Vicksburg and cut off the occupying Confederate forces, cutting the Confederacy in half, and taking a vital stronghold on the Mississippi.
  • Sherman's March to the Sea
  • The Battle of Gettysburg is considered by many to be the turning point of the war, on July 1-3 1863 the Union pushed back and began to take back territory from the confederacy, even though this had the highest casualties of any battle in the Civil War.
  • Appomattox
  • The Battle of the Wilderness took place in upper Virginia when general Grant of the Union Armyled a march to Richmond. On May 5th and 7th of 1864, the Union managed to push forward with heavy casualties on both sides.
  • Sherman's March to the Sea took place all over the southeast of the Confederacy, carving a path from the Union to Georgia, destroying all opposition. It lasted from Nov 15 - Dec 20 of 1864.
  • The meeting at Appomattox Courthouse in Virginia was the site of the official surrender of General Lee of the Confederacy to General Grant of the Union on April 9th 1865.
