Alexie explains that hopes and dreams are the fuel of men because with no goals, there is no satisfaction.

Everyone on the res thinks that there is no chance for them to succeed, so they give up and lose their hopes and dreams.
Junior was trying to pursue his dreams by going to a white school, and Rowdy felt betrayed because Junior was abandoning his tribe to have good for himself.
